If your toddler seems a little restless at first, have them pick out which hippo is George in each picture (he has a gold tooth and my son made a game of it that added a little interaction while he adjusted to more text per page). These were some of the earliest “chapter books” I started out reading to my son and they are a perfect “starter” for kids who are used to picture books. If you want comparison, I would say they have the sweet warmth of Frog and Toad, but they spice it up with humor that is more obvious and much less tongue-in-cheek. The combination of friendship and mischief and the right amount of silliness for a preschooler made these books very popular at our house. There is something really special about the George and Martha books, and it’s hard to pin down. I know there was one hanging around our house when I was growing up, and when I headed to the library to get my hands on as many of these as I could, the copies were very worn and had obviously been repaired many times…Happily, my little man (he was 3 at the time) did not notice the damage. George and Martha have been around for a VERY long time.
